Dr. Abigail Nieuwsma is a board-certified ophthalmologist who completed her residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio. She earned her medical degree from the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine and graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Bethel University.
During her residency, Dr. Nieuwsma gained extensive experience in medical and surgical ophthalmology, including the management of cataracts, glaucoma, corneal disease, and retinal conditions. She has conducted research in multiple subspecialties such as retina, ocular oncology, cornea, and neuro-ophthalmology, and her work has been presented at national meetings including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS).
Dr. Nieuwsma is passionate about patient-centered care and is committed to helping her patients achieve the best possible vision outcomes. She has also demonstrated strong leadership, serving as founder and president of the Ophthalmology Interest Group at USD and volunteering her time to mentor medical students and provide care at community health clinics.
Outside of work, Dr. Nieuwsma enjoys golfing, biking, baking cookies, puzzles, and spending time with her springerdoodle.
