Job Description

This role will assess, perform, document, and evaluate professional independent nursing practices. This includes admitting the patient to the preoperative area, assessing the patient, and preparing the patient for surgery/planned procedure.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for completing pre-operative phone calls, H&P (History and Physical) reviews, and providing appropriate admission requirements/instructions

  • Complete, accurate, legible, and timely documentation of all patient care delivered at the Surgery Center as indicated per policy.

  • Monitors patients utilizing sound nursing judgment, and competent knowledge of equipment based on policies and procedures during patient admission.

  • Assesses the psychological, physiological & spiritual needs of patients and provides care accordingly and in an age appropriate manner for patients.

  • Evaluates and documents patient condition and responses to nursing and/or medical interventions and communicates the information appropriately.

  • Assesses patient needs and supplies and equipment required for pain management procedure, patient needs, and physician preferences.

  • Responsible for completing post-operative phone calls, providing care and direction as appropriate.

  • Collaborates with other disciplines and departments to maximize patient outcomes and ensure a smooth flow of the preoperative experience.

  • Functions within the limits of the MN Nurse Practice Act, State and Federal Laws, the ASC, Pre-op/PACU Department philosophies, policies and procedures and standards of care.

  • Labels and administers medications and solutions as ordered. Applies principles of aseptic technique, standard and transmission precautions.

  • Provides emotional support and comfort for patients/family members, informs family of patient status, and provides patient and family education.

  • Follows proper channel of communication and informs leaders of unit activity, patient condition and concerns.

  • Participates in acceptable continuing education, fostering career and skill development including meeting departmental continuing education requirements.

  • Assists in managing controllable costs by the proper, non-wasteful use of surgery center resources.

  • All other duties as assigned

Education and Experience Requirements

· Completion of an accredited training program for Practical Nursing

· Licensed as a Practical Nurse by the State of Minnesota

· CPR/BLS certification

· Six months (1040 hours) practical nursing experience

Ability to:

  • Comply with company policies, procedures, practices and business ethics guidelines.

  • Complete job required training.

  • Comply with all applicable laws and regulations, (e.g. HIPAA, Stark, OSHA, employment laws, etc.)

  • Demonstrate prompt and reliable attendance

  • Work at an efficient and productive pace, handle interruptions appropriately and meet deadlines

  • Communicate and interact in a respectful and professional manner

  • Prioritize workload while being flexible to meet the expectations of the daily operations

  • Work independently with minimal supervision
